Follow Your PassionHave you ever watched a dog chasing its own tail? The dog gets something on its tail, or just notices its tail, and decides it has to grab the tail, so the dog starts turning back and grabbing at its tail. Of course the dog can’t reach its tail but that doesn’t stop the dog. It continues on moving faster and faster, literally going in circles. Now while this can be hilarious to watch, we also feel bad for the dog, because we know it’s trying harder and harder but getting no where. And we know it will never succeed. It’s just impossible for the dog to grab its own tail in that manner. But we can also see the way out for the dog. If it would just calm down and sit down in a different position, it might actually be able to accomplish what it wanted to do.

Sometimes we are like the dog chasing its tail. We get locked into a particular approach, or a feeling on how to solve a problem, and we just keep work harder and harder. But just as a dog chasing its tail is doomed to failure, often if we keep doing the same thing over and over and not getting the results that we want, then we are dooming ourselves to failure. It is not just always a matter of working harder and in fact that might even be counter productive, leaving us feeling burned out and unhappy. Sometimes you just have to do things differently to achieve the things that you want in life.

You have to be able to step back and take a fresh look, to reevaluate your situation and determine what your real goals are and what it is that you’re trying to accomplish. This type of evaluation means that you have to put everything on the table and take a real hard assessment of where you are and where you want to go. You need to look at how you have been measuring yourself. Is it just through your own gut feelings about things? Or do you look to others to give you feedback, do you have role models or mentors that can help you? You need to develop some way to have a fresh approach. You can’t just keep doing the same thing and repeating the same patterns over and over and expect different results.

Unfortunately many people stick with following the same habits and patterns because that is what they’re comfortable with. It’s hard to change but you must realize that if you are not realizing your dreams then your only way forward is to change. You are not going to realize your dreams and aspirations by repeating the same thing that you been doing.

The first thing that you need to do is get in alignment with your dreams and your passions. Take a good hard look and determine what it is that really moves you, where do you want your life to go. You need to have a clear vision of what you want and you need the emotional energy of your passion behind that or you won’t have the strength to make the changes and keep making the modifications that are necessary to achieve your goals and reach your dreams.

It is only by combining your will with your passion that you will be able to succeed. When you bring your will to bear at working on things that you have a passion for, then you will have the emotional strength and intensity to keep going when things get rough, and they always get rough a at some point. But if you have that intensity and if you are working towards your passion, then you will have the strength to keep going and as you achieve success you will fuel that intensity even more and thereby give yourself greater energy and even greater success will follow.

Once you have set your course in alignment with something that you are passionate about, then you need to bring in the skills mentioned above of being able to get feedback on your performance. While you can do this by evaluating yourself, it is often a good idea to have some outside feedback such as role models and mentors that can provide you with feedback. They will be able to give you a fresh perspective on how you are doing and tips to help you achieve your goals. Of course it is also important that you evaluate yourself often and make sure that you’re still in alignment with your goals and your dreams and your passion.

You need to take the example of the dog chasing its tail and slow down and learn to focus and get clear on your desires and goals and then work toward them. The only limits to what you can accomplish are the limits that you set for yourself. As long as you know yourself and your capabilities then if you lay out clear goals and a clear plan to reach those goals, and you bring the emotional intensity of your passion to executing your plan. There is nothing that you cannot accomplish, just don’t get caught chasing your tail.
