Law of Attraction CoachNo one likes a whiner – but complaining, when you know how to do it effectively, can make a difference in getting what you want out of life. You may have noticed that some people are great at complaining to a company about something they’re disappointed in and immediately getting results. They seem to know exactly how to garner a good outcome from a deal gone bad.

An assertive personality type usually gets what he wants because he knows how to plan the complaint to get results. The aggressive personality tends to shout and express anger in a negative way and the passive personality probably wouldn’t complain in the first place.

To become an effective complainer and get the results you desire, you’ve got to be sure that the person hearing it understands the problem and your feelings about it. Here are some clear-cut rules about complaining effectively:

1.Know what outcome you desire. What do you want the outcome to be? Do you want a refund or the job redone? Or, do you want to change a particularly bad behavior pattern in another? Plan what you’re going to say so that you can be perfectly clear in your complaint of what you want the outcome to be.

2.Complain in person, if possible. Meeting a person and facing him eye-to-eye is much better, but if you have to phone or email, be sure you target the complaint to a person in charge rather than a junior worker.

3.Use social media. The reputation of a company is so important in this competitive market. If you don’t get the response you want from a phone call or letter, social media is a good way to make the company concerned and more likely to act on your complaint. When you use the hashtag of the company, you’re bound to receive a quick response.

4.Focus on what you want. Know what you want and craft your complaint carefully before you notify the company. If you don’t get the response you want immediately, keep going up the ladder. A letter or email to the company’s chief executive officer will likely be forwarded to the company’s complaint department, but since it came from higher up you can expect the desired response.

5.Remain calm. Even though you may be angry, try to remain calm and focused in your complaint. Carefully weigh your options for the complaint and make it clear that you expect the answer you desire from the company.

If nothing works and you don’t get the desired results, at least you know you’ve taken the assertive approach and stood up for your rights. Be sure and tell the company in no uncertain terms that you’re disappointed with the outcome.

Take your complaint to the Better Business Bureau and alert others to the problem by social media so that others won’t be caught in the same trap. Your complaint effectiveness will improve over time.
