Law of Attraction CoachWe often look at failure as being the worst outcome of any attempted project or process and will do everything we can to avoid it.

While failure shouldn’t be the objective though, it also shouldn’t be seen as a complete… failure. Basically, failure has merit and value as it allows you to learn from your mistakes. And when you learn from your mistakes, you become less likely to fail in future and your successes become that much more meaningful and special.

But this failure will only offer that value if you are able to assess it and to learn from it. Don’t let your failure go to waste! Learn to learn from it and you’ll never have wasted your time.

At Which Point Did it Go Wrong?

The first thing to do is to ask yourself when things started going wrong. At what point did everything start going downhill and why did it happen when it did?

Usually you can trace failure to a specific point in time, or perhaps it was a particular lack of resources or an unpreparedness? No matter what the case, identify the nature of the issue and then you can look into preventing it from happening again in future.

Reassess Your Planning

One tip for learning from failure is to look at what came before things went wrong. In other words, when you set out to attempt the goal, look at whether you were sufficiently prepared and whether or not you had taking into account all the variables.

Locus of Control

You should also try to accurately look at your role in the failure. How much of it was your fault and how much was outside of your control? Were you just unlucky, or was that always the way things were going to go?

Ask Others

Being objective when assessing failure is nice in theory but not so easy in reality. This is why it can sometimes be helpful to ask others to help you assess the failure. Ask them what they thought went wrong.

Action Plan

All this is not going to be very useful if you don’t ask yourself what you would do differently next time. Once you have outlined the nature of the failure then, start planning for the next attempt. Even if you don’t have one, think about it in principle while the memory is fresh.
