Failure is not what holds most of us back – rather it is the idea of failure that does. That is to say that many of us are afraid of failing and this prevents us from even trying. As you can imagine, not trying is even worse than failing.
The key to success then is often simply to be less scared of failure and this requires that you rethink your approach to failure. Read on and we’ll look at some of the ways you should think of failure.
It’s Not Failure – It’s a Setback
First of all, recognize that there is no such thing as failure, so much as setbacks. In other words, just because something hasn’t gone your way, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Instead, it just means that you have to try again.
If you enter the ring and you get punched out, you haven’t ‘failed’ at boxing. All that’s happened is that you’ve lost one fight. You get back up, you try again and you learn from the experience.
So the only way to really ‘fail’ is to give up. Until you stop trying, you haven’t failed, you’ve just learned what doesn’t work.
Learning From Your Mistakes
That point about ‘learning’ is an important one too. In other words, failure gives you a great opportunity to assess what went wrong and to try a different tact next time.
In this way, you can think of failure as a force for evolution. Failure forces you to adapt and that in turn leads to you becoming better at whatever it is that you were doing. This then decreases your chances of failing next time and means that your odds of success increase with each go.
So in other words, failure is what allows you to grow and to improve and thus it eventually guarantees victory.
The more you fail, the more you grow and adapt. The more you grow and adapt, the less you fail!
What Doesn’t Kill You…
But even if you don’t think about your failure in terms of what it leads to, it can also be a valuable experience in itself. Failure makes us more sympathetic to others, it makes us wiser and it adds to our rich and detailed story.
In a way, this actually makes the rewards that come from success that much sweeter. Next time you fail, just use it as a way to remind yourself how badly you want to win next time!
