Probably the cruelest test ever devised is the IQ Test. Not that it was painful to take, but all the dreams and expectations it placed (or destroyed) in the minds of parents. And what about the child or adult who learns their numeric intelligence quotient – does the knowledge become a burden or unleash some fantastic powers previously held within?
There’s great news if you are one of the majority with an IQ less than umm, something. A high intelligence quotient is not required for a Champion Mindset. Champions have a higher “grit quotient.”
I’ll refer to this at the GQ. Grit is best defined as the perseverance and passion for a long-term goal. A high GQ will get you past those tough times.
One study, “Grit: Perseverance And Passion For Long-Term Goals” conducted by members of the Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA found that West Point cadets and spelling bee champions who were most successful were more determined, had greater willpower, and exhibited better self-control than their lower-achieving peers.
Researchers found that the smarter kids just didn’t try as hard or want it as bad as the gritty kids. Grit and IQ are only weakly associated with each other.
